The brand new Sabre 48 Salon Express has hit the water, with its smooth style and super-sharp performance destined to carve a new niche in Australia’s luxury cruising market.

Combining Sabre’s traditional downeast style with advanced construction techniques, this latest Sabre is the fifth model to make use of pod-drive propulsion systems. Taking full advantage of this technology, the Sabre 48 SE benefits from incredible internal space, unequalled manoeuvrability and is one of the quietest high-performance, bluewater motor yachts on the market.

Standard propulsion comprises twin Cummins QSC8.3 550hp engines and twin CMD Zeus 3800 pod drives. Cruising comfortably at 27kt and reaching speeds in excess of 34kt at wide open throttle, turns at speed are as exciting as they are in a fine sports car. The Zeus pod drives also enable easy close-quarters manoeuvrability with touch-light joystick control. Together with the Skyhook positioning system, the Zeus pod drives give skippers the confidence to take the vessel into and out of the tightest berths.

The proven, high-performance hull design – comprising a deep vee, long sweeping spray-chines and a wide beam – means the Sabre 48 has performance credentials well ahead of its competitors and the ability to go places modern sports cruisers would not dare. State-of-the-art infusion hull construction has created a strong and light hull with serious offshore capability that delivers excellent fuel economy.

The primary social space onboard the Sabre 48 is above decks. A spacious deckhouse incorporates the helm area along with the main saloon, which is bright and airy with huge upright windows offering all-round visibility. The saloon offers a comfortable L-settee configured around a large, solid wood table, while to port another settee slides inward so more guests can gather around the folding table.

This innovative sliding mechanism also provides access to the utility room below the main saloon sole. Optional crew quarters are available in this space, with a double berth, simple head and ample storage. Other optional configurations include fitout as a workshop or laundry for extended onboard stays.

The stylishly-crafted saloon connects with the raised cockpit via a bi-fold glass door to port and a large electric window to starboard, joining these two popular social spaces to create a unique open-plan indoor/outdoor environment. The cockpit itself incorporates a large, L-shaped lounge and aft-facing settee, centred around another solid wood table, while the extra-deep swim platform can accommodate a dinghy and hydraulic lift.

The vessel’s accommodation includes two staterooms, each with queen-size island berths and private ensuite facilities with separate showers. Storage is available below each berth and in the many drawers and lockers built into the cabin bulkheads. All Sabre interiors are handcrafted using solid cherrywood and elegant upholstery, while teak and holly floors lend to a rich and warm feel.

The fully-equipped electric galley – complete with convection microwave oven, electric cooktop with vent fan and a stand-up stainless steel fridge/freezer – is socially located near the main saloon and has an abundance of natural light and good ventilation via two large opening ports and an overhead hatch. Domestic systems are supported by an 11.5kW Onan generator as standard.

A further evolution of traditional Maine (USA) boatbuilding, fusing modern techniques and performance with a classic look and immaculate finish, the Sabre 48 Salon Express will be right at home cruising Australian waterways, be it exploring quiet harbours or passage-making up the coast.
