BUYING ADVICE #1

One of the most common questions we’re asked by prospective pleasure cruising boat buyers is: “What’s the difference between a motor yacht and a luxury cruiser?”

A motor yacht and a luxury cruiser are similar in the fact they are both recreational boats designed for leisure and comfort.

The term ‘motor yacht’ typically refers to an ocean-going vessel powered by one or more engines. Motor yachts are available in many designs and sizes. They can range from medium-sized vessels (around 30’ / 9m) with simple, but elegant, interiors; to large (nearly 600’ / 180m), multi-deck, luxurious floating palaces with sophisticated amenities such as staterooms, dining areas, entertainment centres, helicopter pads and more.

The term ‘luxury cruiser’ generally refers to a recreational boat designed around onboard comfort. Sometimes these vessels have a greater emphasis on spaciousness and features, rather than hull design; occasionally at detriment to their seaworthiness. Available in various sizes and configurations, many of these boats are designed with a focus on extended stays on the water, rather than cruising (as the name ‘cruiser’ might suggest).

While the two terms are often interchangeable among the boating community throughout Australia and New Zealand, we refer to our high-end, Downeast boat brands – Back Cove and Sabre – as motor yachts, to highlight their exceptional cruising capability, elegant onboard amenities and timeless style.
