BUYING ADVICE #8

Among the countless boat brands and models on the market are almost as many salespeople making big promises in an attempt to lure-in buyers with visions of champagne and oysters at rest in a remote, sheltered anchorage...

A few of these boats are exceptionally well built, offer great cruising performance and last many decades, while others are manufactured to a lesser standard, perform poorly and deteriorate rapidly.

As a boat owner, there is nothing more disappointing than investing in a new boat and later discovering your ‘pride and joy’ is more of a liability than an asset. Poor quality and performance not only put your investment at risk, but also risk the safety of your family and friends.

“PRICE IS WHAT YOU PAY, VALUE IS WHAT YOU GET”

When comparing new and used boats, consider what you are actually getting for your money.

A few quick points to keep in mind:

  • Most boats look good at the marina… not all are built to perform and to last.
  • It’s unwise to base your decision to buy a boat solely on purchase price.
  • Poorly-engineered and constructed boats can be unsafe and often have hidden maintenance or repair costs that could end up costing you much more in the long run.
  • A boat is an investment in what should create a very enjoyable on-water lifestyle, so don’t be fooled by cheap imitations claiming to be a Downeast boat.

Buying a cruising boat is like having a custom home built; only more complicated. Don’t underestimate the potential pitfalls, do your research!

RESALE VALUE

The resale value of a boat is determined by several factors:

  • brand
  • model
  • age
  • condition
  • features of the boat
  • market supply and demand

Generally, boats from well-known, reputable brands with a good track record for quality and reliability tend to hold their value better than boats from lesser-known or lower-quality brands.

Back Cove and Sabre motor yachts command extraordinary prices on the used boat market. These vessels feature a timeless design and fine craftsmanship, are solid underfoot, stable at rest and underway, quiet and smooth with no shakes or rattles, are fitted with quality hardware, have loads of natural light and ventilation with opening windows hatches that seal tight and comfortable onboard amenities, and they are designed to last – there is a difference!
