BUYING ADVICE #7

Once the domain of shaft drive systems, luxury cruisers and motor yachts now have multiple power options...

Whether you opt for traditional inboard diesel engine shaft drive, pod drive, or outboard engines, we advise you to steer clear of any boat with a petrol sterndrive engine! Sterndrives, also commonly known as ‘legs’, are only suitable on small boats that can be trailered or, in limited cases, small cruisers that can be rack stored in dry stack facilities.

SHAFT DRIVE
  • A shaft drive system in a motor yacht offers several benefits:
  • Durability: shaft drive systems are known for their durability and longevity, making them a popular choice for motor yachts.
  • Fuel efficiency: single diesel engine shaft drive systems are generally very efficient, which translates into excellent fuel economy and longer-range cruising.
  • Minimal maintenance: with few moving parts, a shaft-driven vessel is simple and straightforward and is mostly hassle-free.
POD DRIVE

A pod drive system offers additional benefits, including:

  • Increased manoeuvrability: pod drives provide excellent manoeuvrability and improved steering response, making them ideal for tight docking situations using joystick controls.
  • Improved efficiency: pod drives require less horsepower to achieve equal performance resulting in high efficiency and fuel economy.
  • Reduced noise and vibration: pod drives produce reduced noise and vibration levels, providing a quieter, smoother ride for passengers.
  • Increased speed: pod drive systems can deliver greater speed and acceleration, maintaining planing attitude more efficiently.
  • Space-saving: by eliminating the need for a traditional propeller shaft, pod drives free-up valuable space in the motor yacht, allowing for more flexible interior layouts and improved storage options.
OUTBOARD POWER

The benefits of outboard engines on a motor yacht include:

  • Increased space: outboard engines are mounted on the transom, freeing-up valuable space in the yacht's interior for other uses, particularly for in-hull storage.
  • Increased power: outboard engines provide a significant amount of power in a compact and lightweight package, allowing for improved performance and speed.
  • Improved manoeuvrability: outboard engines can provide improved manoeuvrability compared to traditional inboard engines, making them ideal for tight docking situations and for navigating in shallow waters.
  • Reduced maintenance: outboard engines are known for their low maintenance and ease of service, reducing downtime and maintenance costs.
  • Flexibility: outboard engines can be easily removed and replaced with different engines, if required.
AVAILABLE OPTIONS

Back Cove and Sabre motor yachts are available with three power options – depending on the model:

  • shaft drive
  • pod drive
  • outboard power

Each propulsion system is matched to the specific hull for maximum performance and efficiency.
